This experience is currently being built. It will let you move through the historical record yourself — following how collective meaning-making has grown more complex, where it has stalled, and what drove the shifts between one worldview and the next.

Built on the Cultural Complexity Index

The experience is grounded in the Institute of Applied Metatheory's Cultural Complexity Index — a research program that extends the same measurement methodology used to study individual development from ontogeny to history.

The Index scores five thousand years of religious, philosophical, and scientific texts for hierarchical complexity, testing whether collective meaning-making exhibits the same complexification signature at societal scale that has now been demonstrated at the level of the individual. It is the question of psychosocial development to which the individual-level findings naturally lead.

Where the white paper on measuring worldview changes in development establishes the ruler, this experience puts that ruler against the historical record — and makes the result something you can explore rather than merely read.

Three Things It Will Do

1

Trace the record

Follow the complexity of religious, philosophical, and scientific texts as it shifts across millennia, rather than taking the shape of that history on assertion.

2

Compare traditions

Set traditions and periods side by side on a common, content-free measure — so that comparison rests on structure rather than on how familiar the ideas sound.

3

See the transitions

Examine the moments where worldviews reorganized, and what the surrounding record suggests about the conditions that made those shifts possible.
